Great Moments in Vinyl plays tribute to the music of The Allman Brothers Band at Martyrs’ in Chicago, Friday, August 18, 2017.

Duane Allman was a dazzling guitarist who counted Eric Clapton among his admirers. Gregg Allman was a powerful vocalist who knew how to captivate a crowd. But the modest success of their first two records made it was clear The Allman Brothers Band wasn’t living up to its potential.

Then, they had an insight. “We realized that the audience was a big part of what we did which couldn’t be duplicated in a studio,” said Gregg Allman. “A light bulb finally went off; we needed to make a live album."

And so they did, recording three nights at Bill Graham’s Fillmore East in New York City. Released as a double album for the price of a single LP, the response was immediate. Their previous records took months to even make the charts. At Fillmore East climbed towards the top within a matter of days.

"The best damn rock and roll band this country has produced in the past five years.”
George Campbell, review of At Fillmore East, Rolling Stone - August 1971

"I can't thank you enough for last night. It makes all the years of bulls—t that I've had
to put up with worthwhile."
Bill Graham to Butch Trucks, on one of the Allman Brothers’ final performances
at the Fillmore East, Rolling Stone - March 2016
